HearLater vs Speechify
Short version: they do different jobs. Speechify reads pages. HearLater rebuilds discussions for listening. Here's the honest breakdown — including when Speechify is the better choice.
Different starting points
Speechify is one of the best-known text-to-speech platforms: it takes written material — documents, PDFs, articles, webpages, even scans — and reads it aloud with high-quality voices, across apps and browser extensions. If you want a page read to you verbatim, it's a mature product with a decade of polish behind it.
HearLater starts from a different observation: much of what people actually save online isn't a page, it's a discussion — and discussions read word-for-word are noise. So instead of narrating, HearLater edits: it keeps the original post, the strongest replies, the real disagreements and the humour, cuts the repetition and screen-only clutter, and voices the result as a conversation with distinct voices. Then it queues it, like a podcast app for your reading list.
Side by side
| Speechify | HearLater | |
|---|---|---|
| Core job | Reads written material aloud | Rebuilds discussions for listening |
| Best content | Documents, PDFs, books, articles | Reddit threads, comment sections, forum discussions |
| Fidelity | Word-level — every word as written | Source-faithful but edited — noise cut, meaning kept, nothing invented |
| Voices | One narrator at a time, large voice catalogue | A small cast — distinct voices per participant in the conversation |
| Organising idea | Library of imported items | A listening queue that plays on |
| Formats | Very broad | Deliberately narrow: threads, pasted text, most article links |
| Maturity | Established product | Early beta, invite-gated |
Honest guidance
- Choose Speechify (or any good TTS app) if your backlog is documents, PDFs, books and articles you want read exactly as written, across many formats and devices.
- Choose HearLater if your backlog is discussions — the threads and comment sections that word-for-word narration mangles — and you want them back as short, structured listens with the arguments intact.
- Both is reasonable. They overlap far less than they appear to.
